How Much Does a Prayer Weigh?

Posted on May 30, 2008 by Hye

How Much Does a Prayer WeighSharing you another short inspirational story called "How Much Does a Prayer Weigh?" and I hope you will get motivated. Here it is:

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work. They had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store. Visualizing the family needs, she said: "Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can." John told her he could not give her credit, as she did not have a charge account at his store.

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family.

The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, "Do you have a grocery list?" Louise replied, "Yes sir." "Okay" he said, "put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries."

Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head. Then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.

The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scale went down and stayed down. The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, "I can't believe it." The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales.

The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more. The grocer stood there in utter disgust.

Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list. It was instead a prayer which said: "Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands."

The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said, "It was worth every penny of it."

It was sometime later that the grocer discovered the scales were broken; therefore, only God knows how much a prayer weighs.

Make Friends With Uncertainty

Make Friends With UncertaintySomeone anonymously sent this inspirational article here in Space of Reality and I think I should share it here too. Hope this will inspire you as it inspired me after reading it. If you own rights to the post below and do not wish them to appear on this site, please leave a message and they will be promptly removed.

Uncertainty is a truth of life. Take action despite uncertainty. Do not wait for certainty before taking action.

We are normally apprehensive of uncertainty as it takes away our feeling of control over the future. Uncertainty, however, is as certain as death. You have no way of being certain about how your life would be a year or a month from now. In fact you cannot even be sure of tomorrow, or even today. In this article, I do not intend to deal with uncertainty relating to natural calamities such as unforeseen earthquakes, or health risks such as sudden heart attacks. My focus is on uncertainty in our day to day life.

The root cause of uncertainty lies in the very design of life. I had touched upon it it in one of my earlier posts; Life is Like a Game of Cards. From this perspective, life depends on four primary factors. The cards that got dealt to you, the cards that got dealt to others, the way you play your cards and the way others play their cards. Of these four things, you can only control how you play your cards. The other three things add to uncertainties in your life, as you cannot foresee how others will play their cards nor can you have any control over the cards that got dealt to you or others.

The best way to deal with uncertainty is to accept it as a truth of life. Uncertainty does make it difficult to predict and plan for future. However, it also opens the door to unforeseen opportunities and positive turn of events. Instead of trying to avoid or fight uncertainty, make space for contingencies when you design or plan your life. Be open to revising your designs and plans as life unfolds. Look for new opportunities. Be open to taking on opportunities that do not exist today, but might result in the future.

Make friends with uncertainty and make space for it in your life. Your friend may be a pain at times, but she also brings you the flowers of opportunity.

Gay Marriage Legal In California - What's Your Say?

Posted on May 19, 2008 by Hye

Gay Marriage Legal In California Yup, you heard me right. As you read on the title of this post, same s*x marriage is now constitutional in California after the California's Supreme Court ruled in a 4-to-3 decision to overturn the same s*x marriage ban on Thursday, May 15, 2008. This decision will be effective in 30 days.

According to state's Supreme Court, the "right to form a family relationship" applied to all Californians regardless of sexuality.

California will be the second State after San Francisco to allow same s*x marriages. The state currently offers same-s*x couples who register as domestic partners the same legal rights and responsibilities as married men and women.

Do you think this decision is the right thing to do? Your point of view is very much appreciated.

How To Be Happy For Real?

Posted on May 15, 2008 by Hye

How To Be Happy For RealHow do you search for happiness and contentment? Do you often say any of the following at least to yourself or someone else:

"I'll be happy...
...When I win the sweeptakes.
...When I get the money.
...When I have my own house and car.
...When I get this job.
...When I meet someone else.
...When I get married.
...When my problems are all gone.

C'mon, let's all be honest. I am sure there are some of you reading this post who does. I admit I used to say some of those phrases. But as I said, I used to - that was before... when I was younger... when I still don't exactly know the real meaning of happiness and joy.

To be happy, you never get to when. The only way to find happiness is to understand that happiness is not out there. It's in here - and happiness is not later, tomorrow, the next day, next week, next month. It's now.

Happiness and contentment are inside us waiting to be discovered. As stated on a famous quote “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.

Remember, you are not getting any younger. Why not be happy now? Why wait until tomorrow when you can do it now?

An Inspirational Story Called Two Choices

Posted on May 7, 2008 by Hye

An Inspirational Story Called Two ChoicesI was blog hopping when I saw a very inspiring short story and thought of sharing it here in Space of Reality. Let's take a moment to read this story and get motivated as well ;0 Remember, the fate of men is decided by no one but ourself alone. See how man can escape even death through making correct choices.

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life." I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business. He left the back door open one morning and was held up at gun point by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma centre. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he said, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live. "Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, 'He's a dead man." I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked. "Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes,' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

Are You A People Pleaser?

Posted on May 4, 2008 by Hye

Do You Please Other People?Do you please other people? In other words, are you a people pleaser?

Before you answer the questions above, maybe it would be better if we first explain what "a people pleaser" means.

A people pleaser think of other people’s needs before their own. He worries about what other people want, think, or need. He spends a lot of time doing things for others. He rarely do things for themselves and feel guilty when they do.

A people pleaser hold back from saying what he really think or from asking for what he wants if he thinks someone will be upset with him for it. Yet he often spends time with people who don’t consider his needs at all. In fact, a people pleaser often feel driven to make insensitive or unhappy people feel better - even at the detriment to themselves.

A people pleaser may believe that if he ask someone for help and that person agrees, that person would be giving out of obligation, not because he really wanted to. The thinking goes - if he really wanted to help, he would have offered without my asking. This line of thinking happens because a people pleaser themselves feel obliged to help, and do not always do things because he wants to. Sadly, a people pleaser have been taught that their worth depends on doing things for other people.

A People pleaser's focus is mostly on others and away from himself. He often feel empty, or don’t know how he feels, what he thinks, or what he wants for himself.

Now, knowing what the words "people pleaser" means, do you think do you please other people? Mind to explain your thoughts ;0

I Am Back Here At Space of Reality

Posted on May 2, 2008 by Hye

I Am Back Here At Space of RealityI've been inactive in this Space of Reality blog for more than a week now - 8 days to be exact, which is the longest in my blogging history. I remember I used to actively update this blog almost everyday wherein I can post even three articles in a day. However, last month, I admit I only posted a total of five posts ;( What happened? Was I that very busy?

Aside from a very minimal post last month, I also noticed that the visitors of this blog dropped almost by three times. The only good thing that happened here is that the Alexa rank went lower, which is fine.

Anyway, in case you are wondering where I have been for the past days and what's the reason behind my absence, truth is, I was a bit busy developing my other blog and because of too much time I used in the other blog, I nearly forgot to post here. There were a lot of time I wanted to update, but I get too hooked with some stuffs that it's already late when I realized I forgot.

Anyway, now that everything is settled, I think I should give some time here. I've given a lot of efforts to put up this blog and it is unjust if I just give it up. I will be posting articles every other day. I will still tackle inspiring thoughts and observations, but I will also be sharing my opinion on current events, especially the things happening here in my country.

It's good to be back ;0 Who wants to party??? Tell me if you like the new template ;0
